The Pflugerville Police Department is proud to be a participating agency of the D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) Program. The program, which was developed in Los Angeles in 1983, has become so successful that it is taught around the world.
The City of Pflugerville started the D.A.R.E. program in 1988. The D.A.R.E. unit is comprised of specially trained Officers, who have been selected by the department and the D.A.R.E. training staff. Officers must attend and be certified through D.A.R.E. instructor school, which is under the supervision of the Texas Safe Center for Schools, a part of the Texas State University.

The program is taught in the five elementary schools within the city limits of Pflugerville. Kindergarten through fifth grade receives the award-winning curriculum. The core or primary classes are fifth grade. Here, the class is taught for ten (10) weeks. The classes cover drug recognition, peer pressure, self esteem, violence, and gang reduction and much more. The curriculum has won praises from educators and parents around the world.
What makes D.A.R.E. unique is the fact that a uniformed police officer is in the schools teaching and building a rapport with the children. At the end of the 17-week long program, a skating party and graduation is held for the students.
The D.A.R.E. unit works closely with the children, teachers and parents of the PISD. D.A.R.E. officers become a friend and confidant to the children and staff. The City of Pflugerville provides the funding for the D.A.R.E. program.
